XCOM 2

Soldiers of Fortune

Firaxis is certainly taking the game in a new direction, but they are trying to keep the heart and soul of X-COM intact. One of the biggest parts of the series has always been customizing and growing your core group of soldiers. That was the essence of the X-COM Chronicles series, and it looks to be heading in an appropriate direction for the sequel.

Solomon and Art Director Greg Foertsch said that the customization from Enemy Unknown was one of the biggest successes from the reboot, and they consider it one of the more important aspects to develop in the new game. But you won’t be making hardened military vets. Solomon says, “this is really more of a Sons of Anarchy type of squad.” Soldiers will be gruff, bearded warriors (no word yet on bearded women) who look as war weary as the desolate landscape. They fight in new classes, which sound like the proper evolution of the old.

The Ranger takes the hard-charging attitude of the Assault class and adds a kick ass machete. The Scout takes the sniper rifle and adds in new support features. It sounds like Fireaxis is trying to get away from the OP classes of the former games and make players really work to build the perfect squad.

There is even a new, secret fifth class that the developers have yet to reveal, although we can expect that news to come out at one of the many gaming conferences around the corner.
