Two Formats Enter, One Format Leaves: Blu-Ray is Victorious

Looks like the HD format wars are over. Toshiba is throwing in the towel, announcing today that it will cease all development and marketing of its HD-DVD players and recorders.

OK, so what does that mean to you as a movie geek? Well, if you’re a relatively poor movie geek (like me) it really doesn’t mean anything. I don’t have a high definition DVD player, much less a HD TV, much less cable. I’m still rocking it with a standard TV and the “rabbit ears” antenna.

But if you’ve been itching to move from a standard DVD player to the HD format, and you’ve been unable to decide on one of the two available formats, Blu-Ray^TM (backed by Sony) or HD-DVD^TM (backed by Toshiba) to get, then worry no more. Of course, if you did decide to go with the HD-DVD^TM you might find this news upsetting. If it’s any consolation, Toshiba included in its announcement that it will continue to “provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.”
