2) Attack on Titan
If you’ve never seen Attack on Titan, allow me to educate you. This is anime-meets-Game of Thrones in a huge way. Set sometime in the future-past, our world is radically different. Giants known as Titans roam the Earth, eating people and decimating the population. What remains of humanity huddles inside one massive city, separated into three distinct zones. Only soldiers and foolhardy folk venture beyond the protection of the great walls (which some people have started to worship as gods).
The show is dark and intense, with some moments of levity mixed in so you don’t spiral into depression after each episode. The main character is possessed with a need for vengeance after watching his mother get eaten, though he may be one of the worst soldiers ever to join the illustrious Scouting Legion.
This would end up being a bit more linear a game, ala Shadows of the Colossus. You would play as Eren Jaeger, the protagonist of the series, as he struggles to avenge his mother while surviving the new and bleak future. Just like in the show, you would slowly come to realize that there is more this Titan problem than meets the eye. After all, they had to come from somewhere, right?
Throughout the game you would battle epic monsters, and sometimes even fellow humans. While it wouldn’t be a title with twenty different endings, the final act would come across as satisfying and somewhat somber, as is the Japanime model.
Now, as we speak, developers are working on a 3DS game following the series. While this is exciting news (as is the announcement of a live-action movie), I would much rather take this journey on the next generation. Let’s see a PS4 version with incredible physics, allowing you to master the art of zero-G movement. Imagine perfecting the kill strike, each time waiting until just the right moment to unleash your swords, always a second away from death. Can you feel it?
