5) Jason Brody – Far Cry 3

So you’re vacationing on a sweet little island near Thailand when disaster strikes. You and all of your friends are kidnapped by pirates and threatened with death. Your brother, an Army vet, helps you escape your cage and get out of the compound. As you prepare plans for rescuing the rest of your friends, a gunshot rings out and your brother falls dead at your feet. Your captors chase you to the edge of a cliff where you fall screaming into the icy waters below.

This is how the adventure starts for young Jason Brody, the protagonist of Far Cry 3. Over the course of the fifteen or so hours of gameplay, he transforms from a wet-behind-the-ears tourist to a warrior of prophecy, taking on pirates and mercenaries and jungle cats with an assortment of deadly weapons.

Or his bare hands because, you know, YOLO

The first time Jason takes a life, the scene slows to a crawl and the player gets to experience first hand the horror and psychological crisis of the violence. By the end of the game, you’ll be throwing knives while holding a man as a human shield and ripping the hearts out of tigers.

The moment that I think sums up Jason’s badassery the most comes in the endgame. Sitting a poker table with the main antagonist, Jason’s cover is blown and his partner is killed. Now each hand dealt is for his very life. After losing to a strong flush, Jason is grabbed by two goons and watches, horrified, as the villain chops off one of his fingers.

But Jason remembers something in this moment. He remembers that he left all of his fucks at home.

Rising from the table in a flourish, Jason kills both goons and enters into a knife fight with the boss. In a thrilling attack, the player deals the coup de gras and leaves the compound, marching off to save his brother.

And mack on some of that island voodoo strange

Over the course of the game, you the player dispatch hundreds of enemies, but the psychological toll is felt by the character. Not all video game characters suffer such consequences.
