3) Giant Spider: Resident Evil
The original Resident Evil didn’t need much help setting up scares. Combining zombies and viral outbreaks with viscious abominations created the perfect combination of Survival and Horror. Playing as either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, members of the elite S.T.A.R.S. unit, you had to fight your way through a mansion and survive long enough to be rescued.
Along the way, you shotgun-murder everything in sight: Zombies, Birds, Leeches, Giant Snakes, even Dogs. But then, whilst wandering about some caves like a dummy, you come across the Giant Spider.
Now, I played the original Playstation version of Resident Evil, not the sexy new Gamecube version, so my spiders looked more like giant shoeboxes than anything else. For me, the experience of running into these acid-spitting nightmares was more a hindrance than anything else. With the advent of good graphics (circa 2003), these behemoths became veritable terror-bombs, spitting madness into my brain as they descended from the walls of the manor.
Thankfully, a few fire-rounds in the shotgun took care of them as well as just about anything else, leaving only the emotional scars behind.
