The Evil Within
Who doesn’t love a good scare?
Gamers, apparently, because the Horror genre has become a dumping ground for action titles. Think about the last Dead Space, or the last two Resident Evils. The monsters have been detailed and gruesome, but behave similar to any standard shooter badguy: they rush at your gun like it was shooting free candy.
The same could be said about movies, at least outside of the indie crowd. In fact, independently made games are also seen as the last bastion of truly scary horror titles. Until now.
The Evil Within is an entirely new franchise, crafted by the man behind the original Resident Evil and the hugely successful RE4: Shinji Mikami. Shinji has said in interviews that he wants to get away from the action-oriented titles on the market and focus on crafting a truly terrifying experience.
Why you should freak out:
First of all, Shiknji Mikami is a master of survival-horror. He basically invented the genre. Secondly, he is bringing along a team of like-minded developers and programmers to ensure the vision remains true from beginning to end. Finally, in what little gameplay has been shown, the game already scares the bejeezus out of people.
The Evil Within isn’t a story about a well-armed super-soldier manhandling zombies. This is a detective locked in a slaughterhouse, hunted by monsters and plagued by his own degrading mind. The sound design is already shaping up to be pants-fillingly good, and the style is akin to Rob Zombie on a bender. This could very well be the game that revives the Horror genre.
