6) Halo
This is what Chuck Norris dreams about
Halo is the story about a super-soldier named Master Chief–or John, if you read the Extended Universe–who has to save humanity from a cabal of alien races known as the Covenant. He does this by single-handedly killing about ten-bajillion aliens with his armoed fists…and an arsenal of weapons that would make the Predator proud.
I remember watching the trailer for Halo back when it was a Mac-based RTS/FPS hybrid. The stunning graphical demo showed off massive battles, gorgeous landscapes and, most importantly, a kick ass soundtrack.
When the final version arrived on the XBox, it changed the gaming world forever. That’s not hyperbole, either. Halo put gaming into a slingshot and sent it hurtling from the dark corners of the basement into the living room of every family on the planet. It is one of the reasons that games cost more than Hollywood movies, or that the industry is overtaking all other media combined.
Every track in the game’s score is a battle hymn, a frenetic throwdown of strings and brass that punctuate your every move. It has won awards, captivated audiences at performances, and set the tone for some of the best action sequences in gaming.
But not THE best.
