The Morning Roundup: AFI Top Movies, Wolverine Trailer, SAG Coastal War, Trailerpalooza
Written by: Phoebe Raven, CC2K Staff Writer
This morning we have tons of tops to go with Top Week: toppers of the box office, AFI's top movies and TV shows, Stephen King's top movies and the brand new Wolverine trailer in a trailerpalooza!
Even though our very own Rob van Winkle gave it a scathing review, The Day the Earth Stood Still was the number one movie this weekend in the US and abroad. Four Christmases managed to defend the No. 2 spot in its second week against Twilight at #3 and Australia at #4.
The Wolverine trailer screened before The Day the Earth Stood Still and now FOX has released it to the web. Watch it at the bottom in the trailerpalooza!
In the spirit of Top Week here on CC2K, the AFI (American Film Institute) has decided to chime in and named its top ten picks in movies and TV of 2008. Read them at the end of this roundup.
And yet another fan of Top Week, Stephen Spielberg has also picked his Top Ten Movies of 2008. They are:
1. The Dark Knight – “The best superhero movie ever.”
2. Slumdog Millionaire
3. WALL-E – “It certainly deserves to be nominated.”
4. Tropic Thunder
5. Funny Games – “A savage parody of the snuff-porn”
6. The Bank Job
7. Lakeview Terrace
8. The Ruins
9. Redbelt – “Not your father’s Karate Kid.”
10. Death Race

We delayed Top Movie Lists here on CC2k, because the really good movies haven't even been released yet, but we will publish our picks soon enough, when the award season gets hot. Oh, speaking of that, Hugh Jackman aka Wolverine aka The Sexiest Man Alive 2008 will host the Oscars in 2009. Can this possibly be entertaining?
The speculation was true, Chris Weitz is the new director of the Twilight movie franchise. IMDB him to look at his somewhat worrying credits when thinking about him directing material that has so much potential to be dark.
We have tried to keep you up to date on the looming SAG strike, but now things are getting out of hand. A "Civil War" has broken out within the SAG and it reminds me of Tupac and Biggie. It's East Coast versus West Coast and you better believe it! Apparently the Eastsiders want the vote for the authorization of a strike called off because of the disastrous economy. Makes sense to me, but then again, I am unemployed, so would take what I can get.
Outrageous! The Guardian calls the plot of The Dark Knight the most ridiculous plot of movies in 2008! Preposterous! Or is it?
Get ready for the Terminator pentology! That's, right, there will be a fifth part to the series after the fourth one we can see His Baleness in next summer. McG will direct that one as well. Read more details here.
And since we had news of a sequel, lets have some about a remake: Stephen Norrington (Blade, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) will remake and "reinvent" The Crow. Can it be good without the drama of the lead actor dying? Inspired by Heath Ledger much?
Not to be outdone, TV is also giving us another revamp: The "new" Melrose Place has possibly found a writer in Mark Schwahn, the creator of One Tree Hill. But he is only expected to pen the pilot and have some ideas, he won't be running the show on a daily basis.
The Sci-Fi channel is coming up with slightly more creative new projects, such as Stargate Universe. And now they have found their lead: Robert Carlyle. You know him naked from The Full Monty and covered in blood from 28 Weeks Later.
