The First Avenger: Captain America!
Written by: Gary M. Kenny, CC2K Comics Editor
What started last week as a brief description of a superhero outfit has escalated into fan boy mania. Only a select few have seen a prototype of Captain America's costume for the feature film: The First Avenger: Captain America. Now, thanks to many devoted artists and readers, the world got a sneak preview of Chris Evans as the Star-Spangled Avenger!
On May 28th, 2010 Mike Sampson, a journalist for Joblo.com, received a rare opportunity to witness a costume test screening for the new Captain America movie. He later wrote an article about his exclusive look at the approved Cap costume.
"The first thing I noticed is that the trademark wings that flank the side of Cap's hood are gone. In its place is a more traditional M1 Army helmet though this helmet does come over the eyes to give Cap a traditional "domino mask" look. Still present is the white "A" in the middle of the hat (nothing fancy, this is the traditional font), though like the rest of the costume, the blue of the helmet is much more muted than the blue in the comic costume. A thick black strap comes down over the ears and connects under the chin."
Mike writes on and describes the rest of the primary costume from Cap's red WW2 straps, to his belt buckles, right down to the shield (yes folks they are keeping it identical to the comic book). His descriptions are pin point accurate. Mike states that they resemble a battle ready WW2 outfit that is somewhat practical. "the pants actually have a fly so Cap can take a leak if he needs to."
On June 1st, 2010 Mike Sampson posts fan art based on his description. "(I) had to rely on words to describe how it would look. That could at times get confusing but a few artistic JoBlo.com readers have stepped in to help out with their interpretations!" In a mere four days artists were sending in their interpretations. Mike felt that some where almost dead on accurate. The buzz went across the net. No comments from Marvel Entertainment yet, but none was needed for on June 2nd, 2010 another highly credited website would show the first (of what many believe to be) images of Chris Evans as Captain America.
Merrick, a journalist with Ain't it Cool News, posted high resolution images of Cap. A reader by the name of Broly's Legend sent Merrick these pictures and Mike Sampson (joblo.com) confirmed that these are the stills that he saw at the exclusive test screening. Mike states: "Ain't It Cool posted some art today that aren't just fan mockups – these are the real deal. The art you see to the right is just one of the many pieces that I was shown last week." There you have it folks, real images of Cap's costume. Now we wait for Marvel Entertainment to confirm these images.
What do you think? Do they convey the right vibe? Are you ecstatic or would you have rather the costume had more of an Ultimates feel? Do you wish Cap had wings on the side of his helmet? Let us know…
