NYCC’13: Venture Bros!
Written by: Gary M. Kenny, CC2K Comics Editor
We are CC2K pride ourselves for giving our readers ground breaking interviews. If not ground breaking, at least very interesting and full of factoids. However, when it comes to talking with Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer, well…
*SPOILERS* You will not find any here. Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick are notorious for not spoiling anything in relation to the Venture Bros. As you read this interview, you might ask yourself: what the point is. That is just it, there is no point to interviewing these guys. Sure they are cool and you might think you’ll get some kind of hint or tease, but in reality all you’ll get are some laughs. Jackson and Doc are uber smart and very funny. But know this: they will not give you a solid interview and it’s not just us, they play games with everyone! We at CC2K just went with it, so here it is:
CC2K: Spanakopita!
Jackson Publick / Doc Hammer: SPANAKOPITA!
CC2K: Where did you guys get your speed suits?
DH: They are standard issue.
JP: They give them to us on the base.
DH: When you’re an occupant of a moon orbiting space station… it’s just us and a bunch of robots, they don’t need to wear anything. *DOC whispers: They’re naked.
JP: and they got tired of us being naked, so they made us suits. They treat it like it was a gift but it was a passive aggressive kind of way to tell us to knock it off.
CC2K: What can we expect from the new season of Venture Bros?
JP: Ha, you can expect Venture Bros!
DH: Actually, you can expect a lot of big shit and that’s all we can say about it.
JP: Big stuff.
DH: Big stuff, big changes, big continuations.
JP: More continuity then any other season. We are still writing it, we don’t even know what to expect, really.
CC2K: Has David Bowie responded to you?
DH: He doesn’t care, he doesn’t fucking care. He has no interest in us. Maybe he’s using our old number: the land line. *In a David Bowie voice* Hold on Iman they are not answering again. *In Iman’s voice* David stop, stop it! *In a David Bowie voice* I can’t I just wanted them to know that I love them.
JP: No i’m trying to call the astrobase…. no he (David Bowie) doesn’t give a fuck about us.
CC2K: So, nothing you can tell us about the 6th season?
JP: It’s so hard not to tell you stuff, because we are really in the middle of being so excited about what we are writing.
DH: We are actually just writing.
CC2K: Can we assume there will be more appearances of St. Cloud since he stepped up in season 5?
DH: You can assume anything you want. You might be correct, you might incorrect.
CC2K: How do you balance all the pop culture references that are in the Venture Bros?
JP: We don’t put a lot of thought into it.
DH: The way we do it, is not like we have a map and have to have 1 pop culture reference, 1 fecal matter joke. We just write it.
JP: The references aren’t the darlings.
DH: And there are only so many people (characters) that can make them. We pay attention to the way our characters speak and think. There are some characters that don’t make references from the 90s, they make references from the 80s. Some that don’t make any at all. Then there is Hank, who can reference anything because he is a bizarre sponge of information. We never wanted to be machines that pop out pop culture reference. However, we are machines that pop out pop culture references.
CC2K: From season 5 was there any jokes you had to cut that you wished you didn’t.
JP: Every script starts out 15 pages longer then it ends up so…You know the only one that hurts right now is Hank’s olive thing…
DH: Don’t say it, maybe one day it’ll happen.
JP: In Spanakopita!, my favorite joke I had to cut the scene it was in. Sgt Hatred calls Hank. *In Sgt Hatred voice* What can you tell me about this Spanakopita, it doesn’t seem right. Hanks response was: *In Hank’s voice* Don’t eat the grapes because they are olives…. and that was it. I loved that joke so much because it was so Hank.
There were a few more questions where both Jackson and Doc gave us the run around, but that’s the Venture Bros for you. You can catch reruns of Venture Bros on Adult Swim and hopefully season 6 in early 2015 (with a hint of a special in 2014). We would like to thank Jackson and Doc and the great Kimberly Ehlmann for their time at NYCC’13.
