New Line Cinemas has decided to remake the 1981 Francois Truffaut film La Femme d'a cote, and they have tapped Neil Labute to update the script, with Taylor Hackford directing. Now since I have no idea what La Femme d'a cote is about, I am forced to extrapolate based on choice of writer that it involves horrible men shattering the lives of sweet women in the worst possible way.
Neil Labute first came to prominence in 1997 with In the Company of Men, a film about two morally suspect men who both woo a deaf woman in an attempt to urge her into suicide. For this writer, this movie is forever associated with the evening in college when he convinced two couples to attend it with him, and ended up sitting between both of the women enduring their disgusted looks all night long.
Does this mean that Labute's latest will be just as misogynistic and uncomfortable? There's no way to no…but yes.
