So apparently Terrence Malick's return to film won't be limited to just two films to match the two films he released in the 70s. Reports came out yesterday that Heath Ledger and Sean Penn are "in talks" to star in Malick's "long-gestating" film "Tree of Life."
Details are scant at this point. Here's what we know: 1) Ledger will play the lead, and Penn a supporting role, 2) Colin Farrell was in talks to star in the feature two years ago, with about a third of the shoot set for India, but the star and location are no longer part of the project, 3) Miss Scarlet killed Colonel Mustard in the library with a candlestick, 4) Penn is apparently buddies with Malick, 5) an insider described it as a "complex drama."
More after the jump.
Though the recent films Malick has released have been well-received critically, to say they've underperformed at the box office would be like saying George Bush has underperformed as a champion of the working man. How long Malick will be allowed to do whatever the fuck he wants with Hollywood's money is anybody's guess, but since this guy made Badlands, here's hoping it will be for as long as he wants.
