KICKSTARTER ALERT: The Adequate Commoner

Written by: Adam "ManKorn" Korenman, CC2K Video Games Editor

The Adequate Commoner

Imagine  playing through Skyrim as a commoner. No, I don’t mean the way that some people do, living as an NPC. I mean that you are the hero of the story, but you are no stronger than the average person sweeping the streets. I’ll let the creator explain it better.

“The point of the commoner play style is: everything about your character matters. Your minor spell-like abilities are important weapons in you arsenal. That wand that works half the time is a gift from the Gods. A slight improvement to tripping isn’t a nice thing to have, but an essential stratagem that stands between life and death.”

You start and end your story with the same abilities as you began, making the journey the worthier part. You will change by the final curtain, no doubt, but that change will be more about you as a person and less about your sudden bulging biceps and rock-hard abs. In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo doesn’t suddenly earn the ability to double-jump before reaching Mordor. He is the same person (Hobbit) as before, but with experiences and scars that will forever alter his perception of the world.

Like the time the movie was almost Brokeback Mount Doom

In their Kickstarter, the team behind Adequate Commoner explore the idea of playing through a fantasy world in the fragile skin of a regular Joe. Specific traits, stats and feats separate these people from regular tanks and healers. Your posse of pitchfork-wielding peasants may not seem a much for that Dire Knight, but once they’ve learned to master their ill-designed Wand of Smores, they’ll become a force of some reckoning.

Check out more on their site, and hopefully you will feel compelled to chip in a few hundred dollars to get this project running.
