1) The Perfect Storm

Skylanders was a great gateway drug for the gaming community. You had these unsuspecting parents buying their kids a single $60 game, only to discover that, every week or so, they’d need to shell out an additional $8.99 for new figures. And then there were the world packs, the DLC, the Giants expansion. They were making Scrooge McDuck money.

But then Disney got wind of this new technique, and rightfully said: “Who gives a F*** about Spyro?”

Flash forward to now, and you have an empire that grows without remorse, launching new figures on a near weekly basis. If you’re a parent, you might as well hand over your credit card to Disney now and save yourself the time. They own you.

And let’s not forget the rest of us gamers: Men and women enjoying an escape from the bleakness of reality. How can we resist the siren call of our favorite characters from childhood? The answer? We can’t. We buy them up all at once, dropping $200-300 so we can play in every world with every hero. And when the Ant Man figure comes out next year? I’ll get it. When I can pit Groot against Jafar, that s*** it going DOWN.

Disney has captured our hearts a million times over, and they deserve their success. This time, they’ve found a market that never grows up, that never stops wanting more.

They’re printing money, and we are the ink.

And it’s damn amazing.
