THE GAME
Though no in-game footage was shown, Gabe did have plenty to say on the subject of Half-Life 3.
“We want to change everything. Dr. Freeman is, above all, a scientist, and we want to highlight that aspect of his character for the third and final installment.”
You hear right. Half-Life 3 will be THE definitive ending for the series. Gabe said this was in part to ensure fans had closure, and also so that he could focus all his efforts in a new direction.
“There will still be first-person action, and plenty of new weapons at your disposal, but we also want to focus on the cerebral part of the game. Gordon will need to out think his opponents at every turn. We’ve including a robust crafting system based on real chemical science. During the game, players will have to create powerful concoctions that can turn the tide of a battle.”
Gabe said that he was inspired by the acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, so much so in fact that he has admitted to “borrowing” heavily from episodes of the show.
“It should come as no surprise that we here at Valve are huge BB fans. I mean, it’s a mixture of action and science, which has been our jam since the late nineties. With that in mind, how about a look at Gordon Freeman, 3.0?”
The iconic hero had aged well since we last left him in Episode 2. Years have passed, apparently, and Gordon now sports some graying at the temples, as well as a completely redesigned hazard suit.
Gabe also addressed fears that the game would fall to many of its predecessors failings.
“We aren’t releasing episodic content,” he said. “That experiment clearly failed, and we have learned from it. Half-Life 3 will be a singular experience, with no DLC required. Everything we want you to experience will be in the game. Anything after that we leave to the incredible modding community, which we will fully support.”
And that’s when shit literally got real.
“Half-Life 3 will ship with the Beta for Half-Life Stories, a player-generated DLC creator. Using the same tools as the developers, gamers can make their own episodes to share on Steam. This free content would ensure that the Half-Life universe would remain active for years to come.”
