Unity is the Real Next Generation

I really enjoyed Black Flag, and I look forward to diving into Freedom’s Cry, but neither title felt very “Next-Gen.” In actuality, these were prettier versions of the games made available on the PS3 and XBox 360. The graphics were better and the games run smoother, but this is next generation the way that drinking sugar and syrup is refershing.

Unity is already fanning the fires of the rumor mill and it’s only just been announced. Will there be a whole new engine? Or new physics? Has Ubisoft completely rewritten their facial animation code to prevent the “uncanny valley” from creeping back in?

Games look like this now. How crazy is that?

Maybe there is a new story engine, driving a more immersive style of gameplay. Or maybe they’ve just fixed the combat and climbing and called it a day.

The truth is, Unity may end of being more of the same, but the odds of that are very low. Ubisoft has a history of successfully raising the bar with this series in each iteration, and there is no evidence to show that they aren’t aiming to do the same here. In fact, that they’ve been so tight-lipped about a title in development for this long can be seen as a great sign.

I tend to be optimistic in this regard, and yes, that has led me to be hurt in the past (The entire Fable series). But I choose to believe that, when the first trailer comes this summer, we will all be eating our fears and sharpening up our blades.
