Cities Skylines: Snowfall Review

Written by: Adam "ManKorn" Korenman, CC2K Video Games Editor

The first thing to get out of the way is the bad news. No, you aren’t about to introduce seasons to your lovingly crafted city. In a disappointing but understandable twist, the only way to get snowy cities is to load one of the 3 new maps and begin from scratch. While I understand the reasoning behind this, it was hard to say goodbye to Kornville, the thriving metropolis of nearly a million residents.

So you start the game and immediately see a difference. Gone are the lush green hills and forests of the past. Say hello to a frosty landscape of snow and slush. Every building in the game has received a healthy dose of winter wonderland. The effect is particularly awesome at night, when light glitters off the permanently fresh snowfall. A new tram system helps to alleviate traffic woes, shuttling pedestrians from their homes to work miles away.

The flakes aren’t dynamic. There are no new drifts coming through, no sudden blizzards that affect your city. But the season isn’t only cosmetic. You will need to hire snowplows to clear roads (as well as a new city maintenance team to keep the streets in tip top shape), you’ll need to worry about heating the homes of your residents, and you need to take advantage of this beautiful white canvas to paint an even more impressive city.
