CC2K’s Comic of the Week: Justice League #5

Every week, there are a multitude of books being released from multiple different publishers. And while we here at CC2K like to provide as many reviews as our limited numbers can provide, there is always one book that is the cream of the crop. Comics are expensive, so that’s why we’ve started giving you the one, absolutely unmissable book every week.

DC’s New 52: Justice League #5

When we last left our heroes, they were still getting to know each other as well as jockeying for position as to who would emerge as the leader of the pack in this new version of the Justice League. That is immediately put to the test in Justice League #5 as an old foe Darkseid shows up to put a good old fashion pounding on the group. This is where we get to see the league at their best and fight cohesively as a team. And of course, with this being a new story the league has no idea who Darkseid is.

There are just some great moments in Justice League #5 right from the start. Superman has been abducted by a parademon and the Flash somehow figures out for the first time that he can’t fly to try to save him. Then there’s some great dialogue between Green Lantern and Batman where the two try to figure out who is crazier and who has the bigger ego. They never really come to a conclusion as of yet (I guess we’ll find out who’s nuttier in future issues), but they agree that it’s time to start checking their egos at the door, because as we all know, Darkseid is not one for idle chit-chat. It’s a great exchange and something you don’t ordinarily see in any Justice League book.    

I am trying really hard not to like this new take on the origins on the Justice League, but I’m hooked! Justice League 5 is an entertaining, quick and easy read. The writing and art team of Geoff Johns, Jim Lee and Scott Williams do justice (pun intended) to this great story, and show that they have plenty of creative juices in them to keep this thing going. But as I get used to this new, new, new Justice League with the revamping of the entire DC Universe in this New 52, I just hope that none of the fine folks at DC Comics pulls the rug from under me again decide that it’s time to end this one. This is one title and story line that I hope will stick around for a long time.
