Calling In Dead to Work

November 10, a day which will live in infamy.

It’s not often that an amazing game launches. Sadly, we have reached a plateau in the gaming community, where excellence is so common that rising above can seem impossible. Even mega hits such as Metal Gear Solid V only do so-so numbers in reviews. Yes, there are those titles that earn a solid 10.0, but more often than not, we’re settling for an 8.5.

And that’s not such a terrible thing.

My current all time holy-crap-I-can’t-stop game is Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. That game came out YEARS ago, and was a basically an up-ressed PS3 port. It’s awesome. I get to be a pirate and I don’t have whiny Desmond Miles to worry about. Are the graphics the best? Is the story perfect? Does the AI redefine the genre? No, no, and god no. But it’s super fun, and I can’t stop playing.

Destiny is basically a full-time job as a QA technician disguised as a game, but I’ve sunk hundreds of hours logging on with friends.

GTA V has so many story problems and horrifically outdated sexist issues that I could write a whole article on it, but it is my go-to murder simulator.

The point is, we are pushing through a mound of very good games, just waiting on excellence to rear its magnificent head. I’m hoping that I just picked one up, but truth be told, I really just want something fun to play.

With that in mind, take a look at the games that launched yesterday.

Lara Croft: Rise of the Tomb Raider

Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void

Fallout 4

Will any of these be show stopping games? Likely not, but I will sink my hard earned time and money into them to see just how far we’ve come as an industry. Don’t worry about the reviews, or the glitches, or the politics of the gaming industry. As a gamer, you really only have one question to answer: Is a game fun? These are sources of entertainment, and if they cannot fill that primary purpose, then the developers failed you.

Leave the bickering and name calling aside and get your game on.

It is the holiday season, after all.
