Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Not Our First Rodeo

I often have to remind people that future warfare is no new game mechanic. I’m not talking about Tribes, because that is far removed from the chafe that exists today, but rather Battlefield 2142. I lost hours to that game, earning medals and badges before that became a trend. The scifi weapons and vehicles were generations ahead of their time, and no game has created such a time sink for me since.

Advanced Warfare aims to up the ante by creating the frenetic battles we’ve come to know and love and adding a powerful technological twist. This isn’t the first time the CoD franchise has gone to the future either. Black Ops II brought players into the Not-Too-Distant, allowing them to play with some of the Department of Defense’s projected toys for the 2020’s.

Which includes the suit from Elirium, apparently

But just how much can you tweak the gameplay before this becomes Call of Halo: Medals of Doom

There are only so many mechanics you can put into a war game. Groups of AI buddies? It’s been done. Endless “Alamo” missions? Done. Main character buys the farm saving the world? Hell, that’s every game of the last decade.

As Call of Duty: Ghosts demonstrated, Gamers are not satisfied with new graphics and new missions. We crave innovation. We crave originality. Why do you think the Indie market is seeing such a boom, while EA can’t get a hit to save their lives? Audiences do not want a copy-and-paste adventure, they want substance, and Advanced Warfare better deliver.
