An Interview with Night Fevers: NYC’s Hot New Group
Written by: Gary M. Kenny, CC2K Comics Editor
Here at CC2K we try to bring our readers into all things pop culture related. So when CC2K sat down with one of New York City’s hottest new groups NIGHT FEVERS, we found out the reason why people bring their own glow sticks to their shows.
CC2K: Hey guys, thanks for taking some time for us.
Night Fevers: What up, Cin City. Thanks for having us!
CC2K: Night Fevers has been selling out popular venues such as Arlene’s Grocery and Bowery Ballroom. You guys are blowing up fast and we here at CC2K are excited. First question, The phrase “NIGHT FEVERS” evokes a gritty image. How did the name form?
Night Fevers: When a band begins there is a deadly battle between the members over what to call themselves. Endless debating and sales pitches. We narrowly escaped being called “New Friends” or “Brave Tin Soldier”. Night Fevers is 2 parts sugar, 2 parts whiskey, 1 part fear of zombies. Can’t imagine being anything else now.
CC2K: Right on. On stage especially, but even talking to all of you here, I see that you guys have such distinct personalities yet you guys work so well with each other. How did the band form?
Night Fevers: We met through the local music scene and basically all live under an hour away from each other on Long Island. Will and Brian were the rhythm section of a group called Stealing Jane while Danny and Jack fronted the band Show Me Action. Gerard was in by default for being such a ladykiller. We had a genuine respect for one another as musicians so when then opportunity came to link up it was a really exciting thing. The music industry is lava pit but we have this blind ambition and belief in ourselves to make music our career.
CC2K: You guys have played with Tokyo Pop Club, Mike Del Rio, Hoodie Allen, and next week you’re opening for Rooney (for tickets). It seems as if the band transcends genres. What genre of music would you class Night Fevers to be in?
Night Fevers: We’re a rock band that gets compared to groups like Kings of Leon, Phoenix, and The Killers. We love artists that write great hooks but have the musicianship to back it up. We’re into everything from Robin Thicke to Avett Bros, Chris Brown to Maroon 5. Pop is no longer a dirty word. I always thought the phrase “guilty pleasure” was silly. Do what you want!
CC2K: I agree, it feels as if the state of music is constantly changing and that so much is getting mashed together. Which makes it fun. Speaking of fun, last time I saw you guys play, the crowd was getting ambushed with confetti and glow sticks. You guys seem to put a lot of effort into your stage show. It’s wild to see so many people get into a band that they (i’m guessing) never heard before and start going nuts. It’s smart how you guys turn your shows into “events.” Who’s idea was that, how did that come about?
Night Fevers: Our crowd is insane, plain and simple. The shows have snowballed into a runaway train of sorts. I don’t think we can take credit for half the shenanigans that go down. We try and create an atmosphere where anyone who’s trying to have a good time can do exactly that. Performances are therapy, proof you can make something out of nothing. All I know is I love girls in sequins.
CC2K: Is that a goal for the band?
Night Fevers: Yeah, and to play on every continent? That sounds like a good goal.
CC2K: Totally, Oh before I forget, Jack, my wife asked me to ask: “Who does your hair?” She thinks it’s awesome.
Night Fevers: Ha ha ha thanks! I have a sister in beauty school, thank goodness. She’s the only one who can tame the mane.
CC2K: So, any crazy tour stories so far?
Night Fevers: One of our favorite stops of the tour thus far was at Roger Williams school in Rhode Island. We covered “Float On” by Modest Mouse and “Like a Prayer” by Madonna. Afterwards we stopped by a sushi bar with about a dozen people from the show and ordered scorpion bowls until we were cut off/kicked out. I vaguely remember trying to take part in a rap battle. Waking up the next morning in a tin foil suit of armor was a nice touch.
CC2K: It sounds like something out of “Almost Famous.” The band’s songs have great hooks, I remember when I first saw you guys, you premiered the song “Way I am” and for a good solid week that song was in my head. What’s Night Fever’s songwriting process?
Night Fevers: Every song happens differently. Sometimes you can battle a song into completion with pure work ethic, sometimes you gotta wait for stars to align. Gerard thinks of his best ideas in the shower. I get inspiration at around 5am after an all-nighter. We’ve been writing a bunch of new material for the next record and we’ve found that demo-ing absolutely everything works wonders. Finding an old melody you forgot about is even better than laundry money. We’ve got 5 songwriters in this band so we end up helping each other out a lot, it’s very collaborative.
CC2K: Listen i know you guys have to go, so thank you so much for meeting with us here at CC2K.
Night Fevers: Thank you Cin City!
